Earlier this week a few wines came across my desk that really blew my mind. When Mark and I first started out, three decades ago, it was not uncommon to find older wines on a restaurant wine list. On great restaurant lists you could always find fully mature wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. That's just not so common anymore. Some younger consumers don't really even know what aged Cab tastes like. They only know the brute force of younger wines. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, but there is nothing like patience rewarded by waiting for a cab to hit that sweet spot.

If you have been to the restaurant over the years, you know that I adore the wines from Renaissance Vineyards in North Yuba County. When I first tasted the 2001 I knew not only would the wine drink well upon release, but if I didn’t drink through it all, it would age wonderfully in our wine cellar. And it has.

They have stood the test of time.

They've not only stood the test of time,

they've danced a jig to it while working a hula hoop and playing the bag pipes.

The winemaker responsible for the 2001 and a myriad of other classic vintages of Renaissance wines is Gideon Beinstock. Beinstock’s road has been long and winding. He grew up in Israel, then lived the artist’s life as a painter in Paris befor coming to California and helping to plant the Renaissance Vineyards in the 1970’s. After more than a decade, he left Renaissance to work in international wine sales. He then went on to found his own Clos Saron wine in California and now he has come full circle, releasing three wines from the very same vineyards he had planted decades earlier.

Gideon was given the opportunity to reclaim some of the greatest wines he made during his time at Renaissance! These wines have never left the winery and have been aging perfectly, undisturbed for the past two decades in the winery cellar. We were simply blown away by this precious trove of wine that has been aging gracefully in the mountains of California.

Re-released under the label Taken From Granite, three cuvée were hand-picked by Gideon and are showing outstandingly right now – the 1995 Soleil, the 1996 Elegance and the 1997 Village.

The 1995 Soleil is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder Cabernet Franc and Merlot

The 1996 Elegance is A non-varietal wine, was meant to be the most elegant, aromatically complex, harmonious wine of the lineup; a blend of (mainly) Bordeaux varieties.

The 1997 Village is a Cabernet blended from the best slopes at Renaissance.

Roughly 400 cases of each wine was produced each year at Renaissance and we couldn't be more elated to share with you what is available to us.

If this wine said Napa on the label, they would easily be double or triple the price.
