Husband and wife winemaker team, Chris and Andrea Mullineux, set out in 2007 with a shared vision to create authentic Swartland wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the region while embracing reasoned, sustainable farming practices and modern minimalist winemaking. Their commitment to quality and their deep respect for the environment and their employees have earned them acclaim both nationally and internationally, and has led to Mullineux being awarded South African Winery of the Year an unprecedented five times by the highly respected Platter’s Guide.
100% Syrah
Grown on the Schisty slopes of Kasteelberg or ‘Castle Mountain’ on the Mullineux’s farm, Roundstone
These rocky soils limit vine size and so the clusters and individual grapes in turn remain smaller with high skin-to-juice ratio, offering denser, more brooding tannins
Hand-harvested
100% whole bunches were immediately foot-crushed into 500L barrels
Fermented with indigenous yeast
After 4 weeks, it was racked and pressed back to the same open top barrels to complete tannin development and allowed its dark perfume to flourish
Aged for 12 months in 50% new and 50% 4th fill 500L French oak and then another 10 months in 2000L Foudre before being bottled unfiltered.
"The most compact and tannic of the Mullineux trio, with the smallest berries of them all, Schist is a powerful Syrah. There's depth and a savoury minerality to this wine, with notes of ash and graphite pencil shavings, framed by white pepper and lavender. It is a powerhouse of tannin, but they are fine and well built. A profound Syrah, sizzling with tension."
