Donald Patz successfully ran Patz and Hall for 29 vintages. He blazed new trails back then. He's cutting a new and beautiful path once again. He stepped away from the P&H project in 2017 and decided to start a new wine project focused exclusively on the unique terroir of The Russian River Valley, expressed in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
He immediately contacted Steve and Joe at Dutton Ranch as well as Charlie at Chenoweth Vineyards (among others) to see what might be available in 2017. His long history and many friendships in the region paid off big. The grapes he came up with for this first vintage surprised even him: Dutton, Jenkins, and Moonshine Ranches; Martaella, Susannah's, Kent Ritchie and Martinelli River Road Vineyards. Wow.
Each vineyard varied somewhat but overall, The newly fermented wine was placed into small French Oak barrels with 75% being new and 25% being once-used (white) French Oak barrels. Now it is showing a lot of Pinot Noir “perfume” as well as interesting fresh raspberry, cola and cherry notes. Sleek and aromatic I’d love to try this wine with 10-15 years of bottle age.
