Here is a delicious and sophisticated Pinot Noir at a remarkable price.
Pete and Terri Kight, owners of Torbreck in Australia, acquired Quivira Vineyards in California in 2006. Two years later, they partnered with Greg La Follette to establish La Follette Wines. Greg's pedigree includes Flowers, Steelhead, Alquimista, Tandem. He's a pretty important guy in Sonoma.
At La Follette, the mission is to make small-lot Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that embody the essence of the region, the individuality of the vineyard, and the intention of the winemaker. They do a remarkably good job. High on the delicious scale.
This 'Los Primeros' Pinot Noir is a blend of wines from two coastal appellations. The vineyards stretch from the cool Sonoma Coast to the verdant valleys of Monterey and the ocean-influenced region of San Luis Obispo.
Sonoma County grapes (45%) bring depth, varietal purity, concentration, and structure. Monterey County grapes (45%) contribute bright, vibrant, fresh red fruit aromas, natural acid, and overall balance. Finally San Luis Obispo grapes (10%) add color, dark fruit notes, spice, and a mid-palate richness.
Simply put, the wine is delicious and in incredible bargain.
A wild bouquet of raspberry, chicory and tuberose plays against earthier notes of juniper berry and forest floor. With time in glass, warm sandalwood emerges followed by red plum and bright, fruity acidity. With an alcohol clocking in at a restrained 13.5%, it's very friendly at the table with meat or fish or even by itself. It's quaffable to say the least.
