We here at Stage Left have been big fans of Chris Dearden for many years (since he was GM / COO at Robert Biale Vineyards). It is only recently that we've been able to taste Dearden Wines. In March 2024, we held a tasting at Stage Left at which Chris' wines were very well received. We are thrilled to bring you 8 of Chris' wines.

Owner-Winemaker Chris Dearden found his first introduction to wine as many of us do: around the dinner table amongst family and friends. Raised in an agricultural town in the Central Valley of California.

Over the years, Dearden has worn many hats, working his way from winemaker to winemaker/general manager, consulting winemaker to now achieving his lifelong goal of owning his own vineyard and winery.

Dearden cites his time working with cooperage (Barrel maker) Seguin Moreau as most influential on his winemaking style and abilities; working in tandem with first growths and grand crus allowed for an unobstructed view of the highest level of winemaking possible.

2010 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Chris when he established the Dearden Wines Portfolio which today includes flagship Sleeping Giant Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir and Chardonnay, as well as several other wines.

The cornerstone of the brand is Dearden’s Carneros vineyard property which is planted to five different clones of Pinot noir and a small amount of Chardonnay on an 11.6-acre parcel.

Winemaking - The 2021 vintage marks 15 wonderful years that the 5 clones of Pinot Noir that are blended to create Sleeping Giant Pinot Noir have been happily planted on our property here in Carneros. We have long boasted that due to our vineyard location, in an area rich with diatoms and crushed oyster shells from millennia ago, our 15 year old Pinot noir vines have been set up for success. Our five selections of Pinot Noir were fermented separately in small bins.

Tasting Notes - The 2021 vintage of Sleeping Giant Pinot Noir evokes notes of cherry pie filling, rich, ripe loganberries, baked pie crust and warm cinnamon spices on the nose. There are hints of raspberry streusel, muddled cherries, lilac and notes of red velvet cake that embrace the palate. This wine has structured tannin, subtle yet savory depth, as well as elegant and balanced acidity. Enjoy this wine with seared Ahi Tuna and Petaluma Duck. This is refinement and luxury at its finest!
