I don't know of a single vineyard planted the way Stephen Hagan plants and tends Antiquum. It shows in the wines. They're extraordinary.

First off, they use horses to do 90% of the work in the vineyard. That leaves the soil remarkably uncompacted and full of life. The rotating cover crop is managed by a well-trained flock of sheep, which do a little fertilizing at the same time. Geese and chickens also play their part in the life-cycle of the vineyard. Two guard dogs keep the other animals safe and in line. No outside fertilizers or composts are used.

This dry Pinot Gris Rosé is as stunning as the rest of the Antiquum family. Pinot Gris (or pinot grigio), when grown well, is actually a touch pink in the field. This color usually does not make it into the wine; but when grown well a winemaker can leave the skins on contact with the juice long enough to impart a rosey hue.

Stephen is able to let the fruit ripen fully, which allows a thicker skin and more developed tannins. In his remarkable vineyard, the acidity stays bright. 100% free-run juice is left on the skins for 36 hours, where it picks up that slight copper color. It's then pressed and barrel fermented with indigenous yeasts. It spends about 5 months in 50% French Oak and 50% stainless steel, with a lot of lees-stirring.

That seems like a lot of work for an Oregon Rosé, but WOW, it's worth it.  Like all Antiquum wines, it's singular. It's stunning and it's a steal.
